Acoustic or Electric Guitar - Which Is Best For The Beginner

Having played the guitar for a number of years, I am often asked this question by eager learners - "Should I start learning with the acoustic or electric guitar?" In this article, I'll talk a bit about both so you can come to an informed decision.

First of all, let me get something straight. The actual notes and fretboards work the same for both, so if you start with either one, its always interchangeable, although the playing techniques might differ.

Most younger players would gravitate towards the electric guitar thanks to MTV and the "cool factor". The acoustic guitar seems to have a more "folksy" image to it. Both sound very different, with the acoustic relying purely on natural acoustic principles to generate the sound, using the body of the guitar as an "amplifier". The electric guitar on the other hand needs an electric amplifier to generate sound. There are of course hybrids, but that is not relevent in this article.

So, which is better for the beginner? I'll cover 3 aspects below - cost, convenience and playability.

Cost Both are about the same, you can get really expensive custom built electric of acoustic guitars. However, the electric can start to get more expensive simply because of the tempting options and accessories like amplifiers, pre-amps, effects pedals, volume pedals, etc. The acoustic on the other hand might be simpler to start with. It plays right out of the box!

Convenience Again the acoustic wins as you can take it almost everywhere without worrying about a power socket. There are personal practice gadgets available for the electric guitar which allows you to practice with headphones.

Playability My personal preference here is the electric guitar. I find it easier to play, with the strings being softer and thus less effort to play.

Either way, they both should be respected and used for what they are and any good guitarist should be adept at both. For the beginner, I would prefer the acoustic as it helps a lot in ear training as you get accustomed to the vibrations of the body making the tuning of the strings are easier to detect.

My final piece of advice is to don't get too obsessed with your instrument while you're learning but focus on the music instead. Once you start to get better at it you'll know instinctively what sort of 'ax' you'll need. I've met my fair share of musicians who are so into the gear but have not improved in their skill much and on the other hand, have heard some amazing, soul-stirring music from blues masters that have played the same guitar all their life!

Rock and Roll...Then and Now

Some say Rock and Roll originated back in the 50's with Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, or Elvis Presley. Others say it goes back to the great Blues players before them. But for me, Rock and Roll started in the 60's with the British invasion.

Never has Rock and Roll experienced anything like what happened back in the 60's when the Beatle's first stepped down on American soil. Although they are credited as THE group that changed Rock and Roll music, there were many great groups that came from the Isles. In fact, many people consider Led Zeppelin the greatest Rock band ever. The Stone's, Deep Purple, The Who, The Zombies, The Kinks, The Moody Blues, just an incredible amout of talent from that era.

There is always great music out there that's worthy of a listen, and although I don't stay up with music the way I did when I was younger, I do like listening to groups such as Three Doors Down, Nickleback, Bush, Red Hot Chili Peppers, etc. Having said that, I think there are two points that are worth mentioning concerning Rock Music then, and now;

One, although there is always good music coming out, I think what sets the rock music of the 60's and 70's apart from today is not just the quality, but the quantity and quality of the music back then. It was not just that there was great music, but so much of it. And not just from the British invasion, but so many super groups that were located in the states. Groups like Grand Funk, Lynard Skynard, the Eagles, the Allman Brothers, Creedence, Hendrix, on and on. Today, I think you would be hard pressed to find the same number of 'super groups' that you had back in that era.

The other thing that jumps out at me is, how come bands today can't or won't jam like bands back then? Back then it was nothing for groups to jam or extend or whatever you want to call it for 7, 8 minutes at a time. Is it that the people who control the record, or should I say CD business don't allow that kind of playing or is it just that bands today like it short and sweet for the most part? Or was it the drugs that most bands were using back then that produced that ability to jam? Maybe some or all of it, or none of it, but I just wonder why most Rock groups today with some exception just don't do long jams anymore.

Looking back, 60's and 70's Rock and Roll was a different breed of music. Although I like much of today's music, I just wish there was that same kind of quantity and quality of music, AND those long jams!

Playing Guitar is A Passion for a Life Time

The first time I picked up a guitar and started learning guitar playing techniques my whole life changed. I think I slept with it the night I brought my first new guitar home. Its a bit embarrassing to admit, but it is true. I remember the feel of the guitar in my hands and the shape, which reminded me of a girl I once dated. But seriously it was love, pure love.

Then I plugged it in and hit those first magic notes, Wow did it sound awful, maybe the worst noise I ever heard in my life. So started my journey in the world of music some 25 years ago, I found my one and only mistress, the guitar.

Today I am happily married with 3 kids, a real job, and my guitars. The only thing my wife has ever been jealous over is my guitars. I told her once I could have girlfriends or guitars, she said shed settle for the guitars. Thus is the secret to a happy marriage. Oh more importantly, the guitars. No two are the same, even the same model, made in the same year, with sequential serial numbers, are going to play and sound different. They have their own personalities, their own feel and mood swings. I have Fenders, Gibsons, Washburns, Parkers, solid bodies, hollow bodies and semi-hollow body guitars.

Playing Guitars is a passion. Great guitar playing is more than playing riffs and licks; its about presenting your emotions and feelings in musical terms. When I first started playing I was concerned about hitting every note right. Id spend hours practicing scales and chord forms and making sure that each note sounded perfect. After about two years of practice I knew everything in the world about making chord shapes and playing scales, and nothing about making music. Id record myself and the listen to the playback and it sounded like a bored guitar student trying to play every note perfectly.

Time to crack a few eggs and make a new omelet. I started to listening to some great guitar players that I admired like David Gilmore, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Jimi Hendrix to figure out what they were doing different then me. I knew the same scales, and chord progressions, but I sounded nothing like these legends. I decided I wanted to sound more like David Gilmore so I spent the time to learn the solo from Comfortably Numb, but it still sounded flat and unexciting. I was try to play it exactly the way David Gilmore did, when what I should have been doing was playing it the way I FEEL.

Thats when it all started to come together for me. I figured out that I can learn from great guitarist, but the musical expression must come from inside me, to be of any interest. To channel what is in your soul to the guitar, I started simplify musical passages, and feel each note, and I learned not to worry about what my hands were doing. Magically my hands started singing because I had reached deep inside and cleared my head enough to allow for the musical expression I was unable to share in the past.

All the scales, chords and hours of practice just provide me with the tools I needed for self expression. My musical journey will never end, but my ability to explore is now at warp speed.

A few years ago, Napster started off as the music bad boy of the online world.
